Sherry was nominated by co-workers in the BOCES Crossroads program at Harpursville. BOCES and Harpursville administrators, faculty, staff and family last week joined representatives from Visions to present the award, which included lunch, a cake and a certificate, but was also punctuated by a $2,000 gift from Visions. New Visions Visits the Capitol New Visions Law & Government instructor Ani Loew took her students to Albany, where they met with Senator Lea Webb. They discussed legislative priorities and policy ideas aimed at enhancing our schools and ensuring student safety. Broome-Tioga BOCES Recognized for Supporting Employees with Disabilities We’re proud of all our people and programs here at Broome-Tioga BOCES, but it’s wonderful to be recognized by the New York State Education Department for excellence in employing individuals with disabilities. Advanced Health Science Seniors Take Next Step Our Broome-Tioga BOCES senior Advanced Health Science students hit the road today (November 2), as they began their clinical portion of their studies. The group will perform their clinical work at United Methodist Homes, Hilltop Campus, Johnson City. Best of luck to all! Cutting Edge: "Clean Energy and Battery Storage" Program Our brand-new Clean Energy and Battery Storage program, housed at Chenango Forks High School, offers students from throughout the region a formal introduction to this emerging industry that experts project will produce 43 million new renewable energy jobs by the year 2050. Read more... District-Based Pride Our district-based special education program added a presence in the Susquehanna Valley district this fall. The new classes join others in Vestal, Harpursville, Windsor and U-E school districts. Moving Day for Our Third Habitat House On December 8, a crew moved our third student-built house for Habitat for Humanity. With little fanfare, they arrived, hoisted the two halves into the air, placed them on steel trailers and transported them just a bit up Glenwood Road, to the new site on Linda Drive. The house was placed onto the waiting foundation, right next door to the last Habitat house, finished a couple years ago. The house was built by not only Broome-Tioga BOCES Carpentry students, but students from several other trades disciplines. Habitat volunteers will complete the structure in the coming months. Seven Hired for IT Specialist Co-Ops On November 14, seven IT Specialist students at Broome-Tioga BOCES began training with the South Central Regional Information Center (SCRIC), and soon will join SCRIC teams already working at their home school districts and on site here at BOCES. This is the third year the SCRIC has offered this amazing opportunity, giving our students valuable hands-on work experience in their chosen career path. Our Newest Nursing Graduates Each June a long list of Broome-Tioga BOCES graduations is punctuated by our ceremony to honor those becoming Licensed Practical Nurses. There’s A New Boss in Town Our Jibriel Roberts, who works in the student copy center at Broome-Tioga BOCES for a few hours each day, has been promoted to office manager. The copy center is overseen by Susan Groff, and the Work Experience program here at BOCES is run by our Career Development Center. We are so proud of Jibriel! Culinary Winners! At Broome-Tioga BOCES, our growing Culinary Arts program offers students tremendous hands-on opportunities in the kitchen and in the community. These students, shown here, won the Peoples’ Choice Award in this fall’s Fresh Food Faceoff, having competed against respected regional restaurants. Broome Leadership Institute Visits Broome-Tioga BOCES Members of this year’s Broome Leadership Institute visited Broome-Tioga BOCES on Thursday, November 2. They toured our main campus, met with representatives from numerous pieces of our vast puzzle, received an overview of our BOCES Capital Project proposal, heard from a student rep from SkillsUSA, got treated to lunch prepared by our Culinary Arts juniors, and much more. It was a full day. West Learning Center Expands Its Food Bank Operation We celebrated the grand opening of our newly improved food pantry at West Learning Center on Monday, October 16. With October being World Food Day 2023, it was appropriate to unveil the new food pantry after also receiving a $14,000 grant from the Southern Tier Food Pantry. The WLC food pantry pick-up for participating members of the community will be every Wednesday, from noon until 2 p.m. Read more... Auto Body at BOCES In our Auto Body course at Broome-Tioga BOCES, students don’t just hear about fixing vehicles, they actually get the chance to do the body work on cars, motorcycles, trucks, trailers and more. It’s WARS! The popular annual competition day involves a handful of our programs, as students compete in their areas of study. These areas include: HERO (heavy equipment operation & repair), Culinary Arts, Cosmetology, and Video Production. Read more...
